  • Durability: No moving or degradable parts.
  • Value: Built with readily available, existing electronics and hardware making the Kronos™ products cost effective to manufacture.

Where can you use Kronos™ products?
Anywhere - a Kronos™ product can be utilized wherever clean, silent, energy efficient air movement is desirable: from HVAC systems and large industrial blowers, to miniature fan replacements for microelectronics cooling; from submarines to hospitals to automobiles. Kronos™ products can replace almost any current fan and/or filtration application, including many applications with very limited size or space constraints.

Does a Kronos™ product filter the air?
Kronos™ products can remove over 99.97% of particulates down to 0.1 microns and 99.995% of particles down to 0.3 microns. This level of filtration was independently laboratory tested and verified as recently as September 2003.

Does a Kronos™ product purify the air?
Independent laboratory testing has verified the ability of Kronos™ to provide 100% decontamination of bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus cereus strain 96).  Staphylococcus aureus is a known cause of hospital-acquired infections, including skin lesions such as boils and furunculous and more serious infections such as pneumonia and meningitis.  Independent laboratory testing has demonstrated the removal of up to 95% of hazardous gasses, including numerous carcinogens found in cigarette smoke, and Bg (anthrax simulant).

These independent results led the Russian Research Institute of Medicine Equipment to approve the Kronos-based air purification device for use in hospitals and other healthcare facilities.  The device received Category I approval, which means the product has met the strictest regulations required for a device to be used in operating rooms and other areas that require a sterile environment.  Following the Russian Research Institute approval, the Ministry of Health Care and Social Development of the Russian Federation issued a Registration Certificate that designates the kronos-based air purification device for medical use.

Do Kronos™ products use replaceable filters to purify the air?
Kronos™ products filter and purify the air through the use of a reusable, cleanable collection grid. Kronos™ standalone products have been specifically designed to allow the grid to be cleaned in a standard consumer dishwasher. Kronos™ filters can be replaceable in applications where a disposable filter is preferred.

Are Kronos™ products silent to operate?
Regardless of the speed setting, size or application of the technology, Kronos™ products are silent (less than 6 decibels of noise).

Are Kronos™ products scalable?
Kronos™ products are wholly scalable and can be made into any shape or size. Kronos™ products can either standalone or be embedded into existing infrastructure, hardware, and HVAC systems and ducting. Kronos™ products are capable of deployment in a wide range of applications, from microelectronics to large industrial blowers - anywhere air movement and/or filtration is desired.

What is the difference between a standalone and an embedded Kronos™ product?
A standalone Kronos™ product allows the user to simply plug the product into a three prong wall outlet, to obtain air movement and filtration based on the user's selected product parameters (product features vary by product).

An embedded Kronos™ product is either built into an air handling system to provide air movement and / or filtration when ever the air handler is operational or built into a piece of equipment (e.g., PC, medical equipment) to provide air movement (cooling).

How much air does a Kronos™ product move?
Kronos™ products are efficient air movers without need for fans or motors. Kronos™ technology provides air movement through the creation of a dense field of ions that push the air stream toward an oppositely charged grid that pulls the charged air stream. Kronos has built products that move over 850 cubic feet per minute (CFM) of air. The Kronos Research Team is working to increase this air flow further to allow Kronos to serve all of the commercial HVAC market - this market uses products that range from 250 to 20,000 CFM of air flow.

Technical

What is a corona discharge?
First discovered in 1709, corona discharge is not a technology but a phenomenon that results from an ion discharge when high voltage is run through a wire.

How do Kronos™ products use the corona phenomenon?
Kronos, through its patented technology, has been able to utilize corona discharge to create a dense enough ion exchange to create a large volume and high velocity of air movement and a high level of filtration and purification. The density of the ions allows Kronos™ to move more air and provide a better level of air purification than other corona-based products.

How do Kronos™ products differ from electrostatic precipitators?
Kronos products charge the particles in the air stream where as electrostatic precipitators typically charge the fibers of the filter media itself. As result, Kronos products are more effective at filtering smaller size particles than electrostatic precipitators. Kronos products do not require fans to move the air stream; electrostatic precipitators do. As a result, Kronos products are quieter and more energy efficient than electrostatic precipitator-based air handling systems.

How many patents has Kronos been awarded?
Kronos has thirteen U.S. patents and five international patents and has filed additional patent applications in the U.S. and internationally that cover the core technology and a broad range of applications of the technology. Kronos is utilizing the professional services of Fulbright & Jaworski to provide legal advice on patent strategy, patent filing and other intellectual property work.

What is CADR?
CADR stands for Clean Air Delivery Rate and is a measure of the total volume of air an air purification system cleanses of a specific pollutant (smoke/dust/pollen) in one minute. CADR is a rating standard which allows consumers to assess what size air purifier to purchase based on the size of the room in which the product will be used - the higher the rating, the more effective the system, the larger the room size.

CADR testing was established by and is performed by the Association of Home Appliance Manufactures Association (AHAM), an independent industry organization. The test results reflect the size of the particle removed, what percentages of particles are removed and the volume of air actually moving through the system.

Are Kronos™ air purifiers CADR rated?
Although other corona-based air purifiers are not rated (because they fail to move enough filtered air to obtain a rating), Kronos™ standalone air purifiers are CADR rated. The Kronos™ standalone product line has a range of CADR ratings to allow the consumer to select the correct size Kronos™ air purifier for the room in which the consumer will be utilizing the product.

What is HEPA?
HEPA stands for High Efficiency Particulate Air (or Arrest). HEPA is a type of filter made up of a membrane fabric that removes particulates from the air stream that is forced through the filter by a fan. The level of particulate removal is a function of the HEPA filter - a standard HEPA filter used on consumer products removes 97.97% of 0.3 micron size particulates.

Do Kronos™ air purifiers use HEPA filters?
Kronos™ air purifiers provide better than HEPA quality filtration without a filter. In comparison to standard HEPA filters, Kronos™ air purifiers provide better air filtration - a Kronos™ consumer air purifier will remove 99.97% of 0.1 micron size particulates and 99.995% of 0.3 micron size particles (compared with a standard HEPA filter which only removes 99.97% 0.3 micron size particles).

How small is a micron?
One micron is 1/25,000 of an inch; a 0.1 micron particle is 1/250,000 of an inch (human hairs are between 30 and 120 microns).

Are Kronos™ air purifiers ASHRAE 52.2 tested?
ASHRAE 52.2, "Method of Testing General Ventilation Air-Cleaning Products for Removal Efficiency by Particle Size," is the most common standard used in the air filter industry for determination of air filtration efficiency. Kronos™ products have been tested at an independent ASHRAE 52.2 certified facility.

What other advantages are there to a Kronos™ air purifier compared to a HEPA air filter?
By providing HEPA quality air filtration without the filter, Kronos™ products are less expensive to operate. Why? Kronos™ products use less energy because they do not use a fan to force air through a fabric filter and they eliminate the high cost of replacement filters.

Do Kronos™ products cause electrical mechanical interference (EMI)?
Kronos™ embedded products have been designed to pass both FCC and EMI standards. Kronos' business jet partner has tested Kronos™ products on board "live" aircraft to ensure there were no FCC or EMI issues.

Do Kronos™ products produce excessive levels of ozone?
No. FDA and UL specify that ozone should not exceed 50 parts per billion (ppb). Kronos™ products have been designed to ensure ozone is minimized to less than 20 ppb regardless of the room size in which a Kronos™ product may be used. More specifically, Kronos™ products are subject to section 37 of the Electrostatic Air Cleaner Standard, UL 867 (an ozone performance test in a 100 square foot room for 24 hours is conducted before Kronos obtains UL approval for each product).
